Parental Involvement and Student Academic Achievement: Perspectives from Arab Education Systems

Abstract:

This study explores the role of parental involvement in enhancing students’ academic achievement within Arab education systems. The research focuses on the forms, frequency, and perceived effectiveness of parents’ participation in their children’s educational journeys. Data were collected from 500 parents and teachers across the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Algeria through structured questionnaires and focus group discussions. Findings demonstrate that active parental involvement (particularly through communication with teachers, home-based learning support, and school participation) positively influences students’ motivation, attendance, and academic performance. However, cultural and socioeconomic factors were found to moderate the extent of such involvement. The study recommends implementing awareness programs and school–home partnerships that encourage meaningful parental engagement to foster student success and educational equity across Arab countries.
الملخص
تتناول هذه الدراسة دور مشاركة أولياء الأمور في تعزيز التحصيل الأكاديمي للطلبة ضمن أنظمة التعليم العربية. ركز البحث على أشكال وتكرار وفاعلية مشاركة أولياء الأمور في المسار التعليمي لأبنائهم. جمعت البيانات من 500 ولي أمر ومعلم من الإمارات والأردن والجزائر باستخدام استبيانات منظمة ومجموعات نقاش مركزة. أظهرت النتائج أن المشاركة النشطة لأولياء الأمور؛ خاصة عبر التواصل مع المعلمين، ودعم التعلم المنزلي، والمشاركة في أنشطة المدرسة، تسهم إيجابيًا في رفع دافعية الطلبة وتحسين حضورهم وأدائهم الأكاديمي. كما تبين أن العوامل الثقافية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية تؤثر في مستوى هذه المشاركة. وتوصي الدراسة بتطبيق برامج توعوية وشراكات فاعلة بين المدرسة والأسرة لتعزيز مشاركة أولياء الأمور وتحقيق العدالة التعليمية ونجاح الطلبة في الدول العربية
